While in Russia, try to obtain educational information, important for your child's proper academic placement in the USA. It is a well-known fact that actual academic performance (even in an other country, foreign language, and different curriculum) is the best future academic functioning predictor. This happens because of a transfer of knowledge, academic skills, and work habits from one language to another, from one educational system to another. It is important to know your child's actual academic status in Russian school in order to answer the following questions:

  • What are the basic academic skills and knowledge that he/she has mastered in his native tongue that may be successfully transferred into his/her second language?
  • What is his/her pattern of academic strengths and weaknesses in the Russian curriculum and how may that effect his/her fitness for an age-appropriate American curriculum?
  • What is an academic baseline in Russia against which to measure the curriculum demands in an American school?
  • How does one avoid a mismatch between his/her actual level of academic readiness and the demands of his/her proposed academic placement in your school district?
  • Does he/she need academic remediation that goes beyond the range of normally expected problems (e.g.: second language acquisition and social adjustment) related to this international adoption.
  • Does he/she need remediation in a special education environment before entering the mainstream educational setting?
  • What is the best way to transfer existing literacy skills from one national curriculum to the other?

To answer these (and other) questions you may need professional help. To assist your educational consultant to make informed recommendations, you have to provide as much relevant information as possible.
